The Figurative Art Convention & Expo is designed to help artists accelerate their careers and elevate the quality of their work by allowing them to study under some of the finest artists in the world.
For the price of a single workshop, FACE offers four stages of content over four days (five days if you count our optional pre-convention workshops).
Four Stages of Demonstrations and Lectures
You can watch demonstrations from top artists (we have big screen monitors so you can see every detail in high resolution). You can float from stage to stage for demos or speakers, some of which are top experts in the art world.
Meet the Legends You’ve Only Read About
The event is small enough that you can meet speakers and artists, meet other artists and collaborate. You’ll quickly learn that you are among your tribe, and find things you have in common with others. It’s a chance to make new friends.
Paint Live Models in the World’s Largest Art Studio
If you want to draw and paint, you can sign up for our optional “World’s Largest Art Studio” which allows a limited number of artists to work with live models, there are about twelve. You’ll have the option of painting models in costume or nude models. (Extra fee required for studio and space is limited.)
Pre-Convention Workshops from Drawing and Painting Masters:
Our optional pre-convention workshops allow you to study in depth for almost two full days with a master. This year Maestro John Michael Angel, founder of the Angel Academy in Florence, is teaching painting. One of his most famous students is Cesar Santos. For those who want to learn to draw can study under the Daniel Maidman, one of the top figure drawing teachers. You can be a beginner or an advanced student and you will be working with a live model on a single pose.
The Focus of the Event is “Museum Quality Realism”
We want our attendees to have their work in major collections and museums, which means we ask our faculty to concentrate on teaching techniques you would find in museum quality paintings. This often means different styles of compositions. We focus on realism, from tightly rendered realism to lose brushy realism. All are embraced and accepted here.

Eric Rhoads, Publisher and Founder of Fine Art Connoisseur (and PleinAir) is deeply involved in the art community, hosting art conventions and events, trips, and creating professional development opportunities for artists. Rhoads has been a leader in the publishing industry for more than 25 years and is chairman of the board for Streamline Publishing, Inc., a company he founded in 1986. In addition, Eric has spent over 40 years in the radio broadcasting field. He also serves as a consultant and adviser to companies in media, technology, digital media, and art. He has helped thousands of artists develop their art careers with his art marketing sessions (which he will be doing at the convention). He is the Author of How to Make Money Selling Your Art, which became an Amazon Best Seller within weeks of its release.
Streamline launched its first art magazine in 2006 and today publishes Fine Art Connoisseur and PleinAir magazines. Additionally, Streamline publishes the popular PleinAir Today, Fine Art Today, American Watercolor digital newsletters. In addition the “FACE” the company produces the annual Plein Air Convention & Expo. Each year, Rhoads hosts the Publisher’s Invitational, Fall Color Week, an annual collectors Fine Art Trip, and the PleinAir Salon art competition. The company’s video division, Streamline Art Video, produces “how to” videos for artists and continues to release the ongoing, best-selling Eric Rhoads’ Art Marketing Boot Camp series.
Peter Trippi has edited Fine Art Connoisseur since 2006. Previously, he directed New York’s Dahesh Museum of Art, which specialized in 19th-century European academic painting and sculpture; before that, he held senior posts at the Brooklyn Museum and the Baltimore Museum of Art.
In 2002, Phaidon Press published Trippi’s monograph J. W. Waterhouse, which reassesses the Victorian painter best known for his Lady of Shalott at Tate Britain. Trippi went on to co-curate the Waterhouse retrospective that appeared 2008-2010 in the Netherlands, England, and Canada. In 2016, he co-curated the exhibition Lawrence Alma-Tadema: At Home in Antiquity, which is visiting three European museums through 2017: the Fries Museum (Leeuwarden, Netherlands), Belvedere (Vienna, Austria), and Leighton House Museum (London). Trippi co-edited and contributed to the 250-page book that accompanies the project (Prestel).
He is currently president of the Association of Historians of Nineteenth-Century Art and of the Foundation of the American Institute for Conservation. He is former chair of the Courtauld Institute of Art’s U.S. Alumni Group, and a past president of Historians of British Art.
